This collaboration of individuals represents expertise from engineering, the behavioral sciences, the physical sciences, collaborative education and educational assessment.<\/p>\n<p>The objective of this proposed research is to increase the student engagement and learning effectiveness of homework in first year engineering courses. For purposes of this research, the objective means two things: 1) an increasing number of students complete their homework; 2) students are more actively engaged in learning through the homework process. To accomplish the objective, this project consists of three main tasks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify why students are not doing homework, and then develop strategies to address it.<\/li>\n<li>Systematically examine what appear to be recent successes, e.g., a bonus for early completion.<\/li>\n<li>Extend collaborative learning currently used in recitation to homework through the formation of homework study groups and the emphasis on best practices in collaborative learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Publications, Presentations, and Results<\/h3>\n<p>This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. EEC-1137013.
